DR. MARK E. QUIGLEY AWARD

A PHYSICIAN AWARD CREATED IN HONOR OF MARK E. QUIGLEY, M. D.

“TEACHER OF WISDOM, MENTOR IN MEDICINE AND FELLOW OF HUMILITY

Mark E. Quigley, M. D. was a driving force in Emergency Medical Services in North Central Connecticut and throughout the entire state. Sadly, Dr. Quigley was struck down while in the pursuit of his commitment toward his fellow man.

This award has been established to honor his name and to highlight Dr. Quigley’s important accomplishments in his own life and in the Emergency Medical Services community.

From his earliest beginning at Johnson Memorial Hospital, to his last night “on duty”, Dr. Quigley always put his patients first. It did not matter who the patient was - the president of a large, important corporation complaining of chest pain or an intoxicated indigent wanting the shelter and warmth the emergency department could offer.

Every single patient was important to Dr. Quigley. He was a man who could communicate as well with a frightened four-year-old as with an educated adult.

Dr. Quigley’s mission was to advance the level of EMS care. Beginning with the development of a first responder defibrillation program for a rural coverage area, he also introduced the concept of responding with an intercept vehicle that provided the patients with specialized skills and equipment and had the ability to communicate with the emergency department.
Dr. Quigley encouraged provider agencies to work together, and he further enhanced this cooperation by adding paramedic support.

This award is to be presented to a physician who demonstrates exemplary qualities as a teacher, visionary, and executor of highest quality emergency medical care.

This award was established in 1998.
