Dedicated
to George A. Ganung, an exceptional volunteer firefighter and EMT who was killed at the age
of sixty-two while serving his community, this award recognizes a
volunteer for dedication to the service of others in his or her
community. George A. Ganung, when he died, was working towards his master’s degree
in Geology. He had served
in the U.S. Navy and had been employed by the State of Connecticut,
Department of Transportation, for twenty years. As a member of the New Hartford Southend Volunteer Fire Department for
twenty-three years, George also served his community for ten years on
the New Hartford Volunteer Ambulance service. He was instrumental in the
formation of their First Responder program. As with many other
communities in Connecticut, New Hartford Volunteer Ambulance service
found it difficult to get care to a patient swiftly. George devised and
implemented a program that sends neighborhood EMT responders
directly to the
patient while the ambulance
crew responds with the vehicle. This innovative EMS response procedure
is in use in many communities
throughout Connecticut
today. In September of 1987 George sustained an electric shock
while responding at the scene of an MVA. He
was comatose for nearly
three months until
his death in January of 1989. George
Ganung gave his life in service for
the well
being of
the citizens of his
community, the ultimate sacrifice. |
